My Skincare Story | Skincare Week

Heres a big secret for you, I am a recovering face wipe addict. Worse - baby wipe addict. I have only got into skincare in the past two years, maybe less. I have always absolutely adored make up and wanted to test everything out, it has been the taking of of make up I have abhorred.

When I first started playing with make up, I used a L'oreal True Match powder foundation compact that was 2x shades too dark for me, a Rimmel khol liner that was slightly melted with a lighter before application and the cheapest mascara I could find that week. I was probably around 13 years old, I had no interest in keeping my skin good, I was lucky as a teenager to not have too many breakouts, why would I think any further into my face than wiping away the powder and liner with a baby wipe at the end of the day? How I cringe now thinking back. One thing I have always done without fail however, for as long as I can remember, is moisturise. From a very young age I remember watching my Grandma liberally apply Astral cream in her lounge mirror, massaging it into her wonderful skin for what seemed like at least a half an hour to me at that age. It stuck with me. That and having very dry skin due to being a recovering Eczema sufferer I have always seen the benefits of a big tub of moisturiser.

The tables starting turning with my interest in skincare when I started wearing foundation. I got a serious Estee Lauder Double Wear addiction after using some of my friend, Charlotte's, tube before a Sixth Form opening night. I looked flawless, it was love. That night I tried to get it off with my trusty pack of baby wipes, but nothing moved, I ended up scrubbing my face so hard that I gave myself some sort of friction burn! So bad. I knew that I needed something more to get it off, so I foraged in the bathroom cabinet stash and there I found Johnsons baby oil. I remember reading in a magazine about oil cleansers at the time and I thought this would do the trick, and it did perfectly! I carried on with the Johnsons duo for 3 years, at least, until Johnson's came out with some amazing face wipes that took off the lot with no oil needed.

It wasn't until late last year that I finally detached myself from wipe world after staying up late one Autumn night reading the skincare bible that is Caroline Hiron's blog. Needless to say, the wipes went in the bin.

I started investigating into cleansers and at the time I watched a ton of Zoella, Velvetgh0st & Lily Pebbles videos and they mentioned Liz Earle's Cleanse & Polish a fair amount. After researching, it seemed like the perfect beginners cleanser, and that it is. Its a beautiful balmy cream that gets off everything and leaves your skin feeling not only cleansed, but soft and pampered too. It felt like a DIY facial and I haven't looked back since.

At this current moment in time, I would say I am truly at the height of my skincare love. I rotate between four cleansers, two of which are oils, because clearly I loved an oil back in the day! I love an AHA and a bit of acid in my routine and I am a sucker for a facial spritz such as Caudalie Beauty Elixir. In fact I have a facial spritz in my handbag at all times these days. Cleansing for me is the five minutes a day for me, for self care and a minor bit of pampering. Its good for my soul.

There will be much more about Skincare & me this week on the blog, so stay tuned for skincare week. But in the meantime, whats your skincare story? I'd love to know, just leave a comment!
